Martial arts are literally the arts of Mars. Mars is the Roman God of war.
Matt Wilson 2010
Training in all forms of combat could be termed martial arts. Some though have come to be known as defensive tactics. These are different from traditional martial arts as they employ science and are quicker to teach. Martial arts are a journey that cover a lot of subjects, stilling the mind actively or passively or a combination of both. This takes a long while to become proficient in these arts. Defensive tactics are what is taught to law enforcement and government departments and agencies to resist attacks by martial artist, terrorists etc. These disciplines utilise sport science, tactical strength and conditioning, drills and sparring with heavy duty safety equipment.Sport science relates not just to Tactical strength and conditioning aspect but to anatomical responses once we understand the effect of the anatomical responses we can adapt our training. When a body reaches a certain temperature heart rate dehydration acidity stimuli normal bodily functions are suspended to allow for limited responses to an extreme situation.
Tactical strength and conditioning and general strength and conditioning are the tools we use at Adapt and Survive to overcome the adverse anatomical reactions to stress.
Combined Defensive Training.
There are multiple disciplines in defensive training but all rely on common points related to realistic training techniques, a high degree of protection to unload on other trainees They are also proven and improved as new disciplines come into vogue. Krav Maga the defensive tactic taught to the Israeli security machine, walksafe this is more about the prefight cues and defensive postures. Scietific studies into human bodies under stress in Close Quarter Battle are taught. These form the basis of defensive training at Adapt and Survive. Arnis is used to teach close quarter use of weapons, improvised as carrying weapons is a illegal.
Bruce Lee one of the greatest exponents of martial arts and an ambassador for them, put it best in his, ”Simply to simplify.” This quote related to the teaching of martial arts. Defensive tactics deliver this sort of training. Short on options to a given attack it is quicker to respond, and needs to be, as this is taught to police and military who may need to subdue a martial artist.
Because these defensive tactics are taught to people who have passed entry fitness exams into the services in which they serve, and the limited curriculum time to teach them they are considerably quicker to become fully familiar with. But all instructors from PPCT, the most theoretical and scientific of all martial arts, stresses the importance of hard physical conditioning. Y
Arnis. Is a Philippine fighting art. It is a fairly simple to teach arnis which is similar to silat escrima kali krabbe and probably older European fighting arts as in England there were contact weapons including truncheons cudgels staff quarter staff. This is a useful form of training for civilians unable to carry weapons legally as training in these arts can assist an individual to improvise a weapon to use, stick , bars, even light chains rope electrical cable are covered. This can greatly assist an individual faced with many armed attackers. Empty hand disarming of knives is possible, but likely to result in some injuries. A greater distance forced by an improvised weapon can help reduce the risk of injury from the weapon.
In short martial arts are a spiritual journey, defensive tactics is usable from day one.
Though the drawback for civilians is they are not at the same level of fitness and strength as a member of forces/service personnel who must undergo physical tests to be employed. this is managed at adapt and survive by tactical strength and conditioning before technique is taught, it works to improve trainees in all respects and situations.
This is the defensive part of our training.Sticks, knives improvised weapons and their use.
Weapons at Adapt and Survive include sticks, all lengths from the very short to the staff. Weapon training teaches the body and mind to think earlier. The added dangerous distance between combatants bodies forces a practitioner to attack from greater distances, opening and closing, it also means having to negate the opponents weapon during your own attack compound attacking. Maneuvering, this is the greatest challenge in warfare, and a fight is war on a small scale, and what is the definition of a war/duel, ” a state of aggression continued until one side is no longer able to launch an attack. So a fight is always conducted until the opponent can no longer be a threat.
Improvised weapons are everyday objects that can be utilized by a person familiar with their use. All possible weapons and their use is covered at Adapt and Survive, including sparring with weapons and armour.
There is also an invitation only segment of weapons training at Adapt and Survive. This is only communicated to approved clients. This is an edged weapon school. The edged weapon school was taught to me by a street fighter. I was extremely lucky to be taught this as I believe it is a relic of an old English fighting system. All weapons were used in European fighting, sadly though when firearms were introduced most of the knowledge passed away. This is a tragedy.
